INT. GRANDMAÕS KITCHEN – DAY
A page-a-day wall calendar reads ÔThursday, July 12thÕ. The
kitchen table is set for three, with soup bowls.
GRANDMA
Do
you boys like soup? ItÕs fish chowder.
Wert unhappily lifts his spoon in the bowl of yellow-white
ÔsoupÕ. A cooked crab claw, still in the shell, briefly surfaces in his spoon,
then sinks below the surface.
WERT
IÕmÉ
not really hungry.
GRANDMA
Oh,
okayÉ IÕll put it away and we can have it for supper.

INT. KITCHEN – DAY
Grandma is cooking something awful. The boysÕ voices are
heard approaching.
JAMEY
WeÕll
tell Grandma about it.
WERT
We
should take a picture of it to show her!
JAMEY
Okay!
We will.
They enter the kitchen in a flush of excitement.
WERT
We
found a giant rocket!
Grandma receives this information, but it seems to just bounce
off her brain.
JAMEY
ItÕs
like, a missile or something. Maybe itÕs a weather rocket.
WERT
ItÕs
about 80 feet tall!
JAMEY
N-No,
itÕs notÉ
Very little of this seems to reach GrandmaÕs understanding.
GRANDMA
Oh,
my goodness.
§------------GRANDMA SCENE 3-------------------ˆ
The cuckoo pops out and sings the hour. Jamey is still on
the couch with his book. Wert is not around. Grandma walks in, sees Jamey, and
exclaims in surprise:
GRANDMA
Oh!
James. Did you just get here, dear?
JAMEY
We
came yesterday, Grandma.
GRANDMA
Oh,
my goodness. Is your brother here?
JAMEY
HeÕs
around here somewhere.
GRANDMA
Well
IÕll make you boys some lunch.
She toddles off.
CUT
TO:
INT. KITCHEN – DAY
Jamey is sitting alone at the table, just finishing his
sandwich. ThereÕs a sandwich sitting waiting for Wert.
GRANDMA
(O.S.)
Would
you bring that to your brother, dear?
Jamey picks up the plate and goes to the door of the next
room. Wert isnÕt in there. He goes to the base of the stairs and calls up.
JAMEY
Wert?
No answer.
