The Big Room is a breathtaking, cavernous space. It's definitely where whatever it was got done. Everything is metal girders and subway grating.

Light streams in through the broken windows. It is very quiet.


Really, still pictures do a poor job of conveying the sense of space in there. Here's a short video that does it slightly better:

There is arcane machinery everywhere.
On the ground floor at the other end from where we first entered, there was something that for some reason reminded me of a decontamination device I once saw in a Bond movie.


The metal staircases had a lot of missing steps, so we were very careful to hold the banisters and, when possible, walk on the frames. Fortunately nothing gave out while we were on it.



From the 2nd and third levels, we could see through the skylight at what awaited us on the roof.
We also found the base of the smokestack here, which surprised me. I had expected it would be supported by brick all the way down to the basement, but in fact, it's this weak-looking thing:
